What is Essure?
Essure, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002, consists of two small coils that are implanted through the vagina into the fallopian tubes. After Essure is implanted, a barrier of tissue forms around the implant which prevents sperm from reaching eggs.
Essure Side Effects
This device has demonstrated a strong tendency to migrate, which can lead to:
- Chronic joint pain and fatigue
- Puncturing of the uterus and fallopian tubes
- Allergic reaction to the device
- Abscesses limited to the fallopian tube, uterus
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Excessive/abnormal bleeding
- Intestinal perforations/obstructions
Additional Side Effects
Additionally, women have experienced side effects including severe pain and cramping, blood clots, infection, pelvic pain, depression, weight gain, and extreme fatigue. From 2002-2013, the FDA received approximately 988 reports citing adverse events related to Essure.
